Case Study: Turnip & Duck

Turnip & Duck is an award-winning, writer-led production company producing original children’s IP, with a particular focus on character-based comedy and educational crossover. Turnip & Duck shows have a distinctly Irish voice with a broad international appeal, and their unique brand of edutainment, dedication to comedy and the needs of their audiences, has created a slate of high quality original IP for Preschool, Bridge, 6+ and co-viewing audiences.

Maddie is a 7-year-old girl who loves music and adventure, and just so happens to have a vision impairment. Triggs is her doggy best friend who loves doggy biscuits and mischief! They live together with their mum and dad in a colourful town of Higgledy-Piggledy, and here they find music and adventure in the sounds of the everyday by really listening to the world around them.

The director and producer of Maddie & Triggs approached Empatheyes to assist with the technical aspects of producing a TV show and storybook that aligned to how a young person would experience watching the show with a visual impairment.  The goal of Maddie + Triggs is to create a show whereby if two kids (one sighted and one vision impaired) sit down side-by-side to watch the show, neither will have a lesser experience.

The show’s ethos is to promote accessibility and inclusion so often barriers for those with a vision impairment. Empatheyes enjoy working with the team at Turnip + Duck who use the power of storytelling. This resonates with our own story as to how both technology and creativity can be cleverly crafted whether sighted or visually impaired

Maddie + Triggs podcasts are available on RTÉjr Radio, Spotify with the TV version due in production later in 2022.
