Connected Health is one of the leading home care providers in the UK and Ireland, providing effective and efficient high quality healthcare services in the home and in the community, promoting prevention and decreasing the demand for costly hospitalisation.

Empatheyes worked with the Directors ofClinical Education & Training, and Technology & Special Projects to formulate a training pilot.  The aim of which was to improve professional confidence and awareness of visual impairment in adults, and how this may affect the daily living of those in domiciliary care settings.

The training covered the common causes of visual impairment in adult and elderly patients, and to highlight possible risks and behaviours associated with these conditions to improve care worker’s awareness in domiciliary care settings.Training was given to 30 Connected Health Domiciliary care workers.The training consisted of a verbal explanations of each of the causes of adult visual impairment, consolidated with the use of our VR software during this session, to allow for the effectiveness of the VR training to be evaluated in isolation. Training documents were provided alongside pre/post-evaluation.

Training outcomes for domiciliary care workers included:

  • A better, and more lasting, understanding of different eye conditions, different visual functions and how they affect eyesight both individually and when layered as part of an eye condition
  • An awareness of how various eye conditions present different challenges
  • An understanding of how to explain to family or other carers the challenges presented by sight loss
  • Improved understanding of how others may see, resulting in increased empathy
  • 40% increased knowledge after training, significantly increasing retention rate
  • 100% of participants said VR enhanced their learning experience
  • 100% of participants would also recommend the training to other carers or
  • Families of patients to better understand visual impairment.
